Burns Beach community movie night a big hit

Azelene Williams and daughter Sian

Burns Beach residents turned their Stage Teal Park in McIntyre Avenue into an outdoor cinema to celebrate the holiday season.

Residents, their friends and supporters of the not-for-profit organisation, Kidzucate, gathered in the park in late December for a successful movie night also designed to help raise funds for the charity.

Around 150 people gathered for a picnic on the lawns ahead of the Australian movie – Paper Planes – which follows one boy’s passion for flight and his quest to triumph in the World Paper Plane Championships. Santa joined in too with sweet treats for the children!

Burns Beach resident Azelene Williams, who co-founded Kidzucate with her daughter, Sian (the face of Kidzucate) hit on the idea of making use of the park’s natural features to screen a movie and help raise much-needed funds.

A victim of bullying because of her stutter, Sian came up with the idea of Kidzucate, which encourages kids to help others stay out of harm’s way.

Sian is the youngest person ever awarded a Human Rights Award, which she received at the Youth for Human Rights Summit in Belgium in 2014 for her work in preventing child harm.

“Our objective is harm prevention for children, whether it is bullying or abuse in any of its forms, we encourage kids to help other kids to be safe,” said Azalene.

She said she was pleased with the turnout for the group’s first outdoor movie night fundraiser and was grateful for support from Peet, who is developing Burns Beach and helped with some of the costs of staging the event.
“The bowl-shaped area in the park is ideal for this type of event,” Azelene said.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy the night and I was really pleased that they tidied up afterwards.”

The success of the event adds one more use to the list of activities available in ‘Pirate Park’, which is part of Peet’s popular master-planned community at Burns Beach.

Its playground, barbecue and sporting facilities are already widely used by residents.
